About Us
Kristiansand Fencing Club (Krs FC) was established on 30 March 2009.
Apart from a college club that closed down some 10-15 years ago, Kristiansand (town and municipality) - and Vest-Agder county for that matter - has never before had a fencing club. The county consists of 15 municipalities of which Kr.sand is one, and the closest fencing clubs are in Stavanger, then in Denmark (Ålborg, Thisted, Århus), and thereafter in the Oslo-area.
We are delighted to finally have a fencing club in Kristiansand. The club exists to provide opportunities for its members to learn and practise fencing in a friendly environment. Our focus is recreation, fun and learning.
In addition to developing fencing in Kristiansand, we would like to support others in the region in setting up their own fencing clubs. Our ambition is to help establish a fencing community in our local area and across the southernmost region of Norway, known as "Sørlandet".
As of September 2009, Kristiansand Fencing Club is the only 3-weapon club in Norway, and our wish is to have fencing in all 3 weapons: foil, epee and sabre. Being a new club and with mostly fencing novices, we are currently practising these 3 weapons at basic levels. We hope to have regular visits from qualified guest coaches to train our members, and to help us improve in technique and all other aspects of fencing.
In contrast with the other clubs in Norway, Kristiansand Fencing Club uses the foil as the weapon of introduction to fencing. It is currently the only club to do so, and the other Norwegian clubs fence exclusively with epee.
Our reason is partly that the foil is the weapon conventionally recommended for fencing novices, as chosen also in European countries with larger fencing communities. In part we believe foil fencing is valuable in its own right and should be re-introduced (together with sabre fencing) in the Norwegian fencing community.
In any event, after basic fencing training with foil for approx. 2-4 months, our members have the choice of continuing with foil, or starting with epee or sabre. Most members fence several weapons, for variation and flexibility in choice of sparring partners.
Krs FC aims to develop fencing in all 3 weapons in Kristiansand, and in the "Sørlandet" region. In doing so, we hope to contribute to the revival of foil and sabre fencing in Norway, both of which died out in the 1980s.
Our ambition is that - in time - there should be fencing with all 3 weapons in Norway, just as there is in other countries, including our Nordic neighbours.
